Final Piece - Alice

Today we finished our opening sequence. We decided to call our film Alice like Alice in wonderland. We thought that this name would create a scary but a thriller type atmosphere. We decided this from a list of names. Our list of names were:-

:- Emily
:- Candy
:- Carrie
:- Daisy
:- Sally
:- Alice
:- Sarah
:- Zahara
:- Lacy
:- Polly

When we chose the name for our final piece, i came up with the idea of someone saying the name as a voice over when the name appears. This would give a creepy sense to the audience.

Update on Editing

Today myself, Shelley and Samantha edited our film. Yesterday, Samantha and Shelley tried to edit some more, but the programme was not working properly again. All they did was put the footage in the right sequence and turn two of the shots into black and white. At this point the programme strted to play up again. They then decided to stop editing and try again the next day.

Today we started editing again and the programme was fine. Shelley turned some more shots into black and white, and also made it look like it was old age footage. This was used to show that these shots were part of a dream.

We also changed the lighting of two of the shots of Samantha twisting and turning whilst she was sleeping. This was to show that her character was having a nightmare. It was also to make the atmosphere more like a thriller.

We also tried other effects on other shots but they had no effect on those shots. We also lightened up two of the shots as they were too dark and couldn't see what was hapening in the mise en scene.

Furthermore, we added some transistions in order for the footage to make sense and for it to not look to jumpy. So we added some cross dissolves.

In addition, we added the titles. We first thought of "Apple Films Presents", but we remembered that we can not usecopyright makes. So we came up with "Clucky Films Presents" and "A Deathly Productions". We then went on to show who did what in the making of the opening. As a group we decided to show the titles in between shots. The titles are shown in red.

Today we also decided on the music.
Ernest created 5 different songs for our media film. We listened to them today and found one in which Ernest created that went with the footage. The music is slow but not too slow and is also in time with the footage. Thanks to Ernest, the music creates a thriller type atmosphere.

Music

Yesterday, i looked on a website called mobygratis to gain some ideas for non copyright background music in which we could use. I looked through the music in which was available but in my opinion i thought that the music from the website, was either too quick or too slow, and the beats would not have gone with the footage.

In addition, Samantha looked on another website for some music. She did find a few tunes. But we also ask a friend who agreed to help us. Ernest looked our footage and created a few tunes.

Meeting with Samantha

Because i was not able to help edit on Friday, i asked Samantha what herself and Shelley did, as Shelley was at Robert Clack whilst myself and Samantha were in Warren. They told me that they imported some of the same footage again and edited them. Samantha asked me about the music website we would be using. We are now starting to think about the music we would use for our film.

Editing

On Wednesday 22nd April 2009, we were editing our film. The previous day Shelley had imported the footage onto the computer and herself and Samantha started to edit. However, they had encountered some problems with the programme in which we use to edit our footage. Every time they tried to crop a piece of the footage the sequence would change. Here they both decided to try again the next day.

On Wednesday we all edited more of the footage. Samantha and Shelley both showed me what they had done so far. They had imported all the footage and cropped the scenes. They footage was not in exact order as the previous day there was problems with the programme.

As started to edit, i cropped some of the footage and was also shown another wayof cropping the footage. The other way was to split the footage into half and then crop it thiswas to help as the programme was not working properly.

Half way through us editing, the programme was not working properly again. We had tried everything to get the programme working, but what was happening the previous day, was happening again. I now understand what Samantha and Shelley was telling me about the programme.

We had then decided to try again on Friday 24th April 2009. However, i could not make it again because of family circulstances. Here Samantha and Shelley were editing. They had imported some of the footage again to see if the programme would work this way. They had edited the footage and that was all they did on Friday. The programme was still playing up a little bit but not as much.

Back to the original idea

Because of the time, in the half term, we had decided to go back to our original idea. We had decided that on Monday 20th April 2009 we would film again. However, i was not able to film because of family circumstances. Samantha and Shelley filmed on that Monday. This time they filmed inside where they could use other aspects to create a thriller atmosphere. We kept sort of the same storyline, as we used more different materials, and also decided to use some shots as part of a dream, but changed the camera angles and changed some bits of the storyboard to create the storyline and personality of the character.

There were a number of different camera angles used to create our opening sequence. The camera shots used were, close ups of Samantha's face (To show her facial expressions and certain reaction). We also used mid shots to show facial expressions and the body language. Extreme close ups were also used on Samantha's eye. This was to show that the person in her dream was possessing or after Samantha's character. Long shots were also used mainly at the begining of the sequence. This was used to show where the character is and what her surroundings are. The camera shots used gave a sense of a thriller atmosphere. The lighting also helped as flashes of light was used to show that Samantha's character was having a bad dream and that somehow the person in her dream was haunting her, and was discomforting her. This also shows how psychologically unstable she is. We also see shots of dolls. This was to show that Samantha's character has an obssession of them. The dolls are the ones who are effecting her in her dreams.

There is a shot of Samatha's character's reflection in the mirror. She is smeared with make up to give her more of a disturbing appearance
. It shows that she is different and realises this when she shes herself in the mirror. The makeup is really bad showing there is something wrong with her. Her head is tilted to give more of a disturbed look also. Also, we used the clip of the eye, but this time we put a closeup of Samantha's face after it to create kind of a graphic match. This bit draws the audience to the eye straight away and shows a thriller type atmosphere.

The above video is an animatic in which shows our storyboard. Samantha and Shelley created the stoyboard as i was at work. This animatic only shows the pictures. The video below shows the picture with the explanations and camera shots beside it.

A New Idea

Today, myself, Samantha and Shelley had a meeting. We looked at our previous footage that we recorded. We decided that we should create a new idea because we thought that our first idea was not good. So we came up with another idea.

Our new idea is that there is a man digging a hole in a middle of a forest. We then see a quick flashback of the same man grabbing a
woman's hair. We then go back to the scene where the man is digging a hole. Another flashback will appear. In this flashback, we see the woman slaps the man across the face, she then runs and falls to the floor, the man then laughs in a psychotic way.

We then come to the digging scene again. Here we see a shot of the mans face. He is
laughing whilst he is digging. Here we will use low angled shots.

A flashback will appear again. He smiles. Here we decided to use graphic match. In the same flashback, we see the woman crawling backwards. She feels the floor as she is searching for something. She grabs an object and throws it towards the camera. The object in which is thrown will go into the next scene which is the digging scene again. Here, the mans face is an angry face and we see the blood coming down his
face. This shows where the woman hit him with the object.

Another
flashback will occur. In this flashback we see the man killing the woman with the object that was thrown at him. We then go straight to the digging scene again and we see the woman's hand underneath the dirt and it twitches. Then the man chucks a school picture of the woman onto the dirt, and we finish with a shot of this.

To make our film look more of a thriller, the man will be psychologically unstable. We will see this through his facial expressions and his body language. We haven't yet decided who will be the man and the woman in the film, and we haven't decided when we will film.

Filming

Once we looked at the footage in which we recorded for our film, we decided that the shots were not good. We also decided that creating the storyline as a film was not working. It did not look as if it really is a thriller film. The shots we done were not enough and did not show continuity or the conventions of a thriller. Instead, we decided to create a different opening sequence. We already created a new storyboard and we are going to film during the Easter holiday's. However, we have not decided what day yet.
